Bars Set
Does anyone know what a Bar Set in the 1920s looks like?
Im part of a drama production and am incharge of backstage set and props as part of my assessment!! I really need to know what a bar set in the '20s would look like.

NOTE: a very detailed answer may sway my vote a bit!!!
Bars during the 1920's were technically ILLEGAL due to the Volstead Act the Prohibition of Alcohol - - - that said Bars varied just as widely then as now.
THAT SAID - - - - where is this play set? If you want stark realism be forewarned that real life is not as pretty as the movies. Speaking of moves, go watch some Laurel & Hardy comedies, though mostly filmed at the end of the 1920's into the 1930's, several times when the boys snuck out on their wives they ended up in a bar.
Here are three scenarios. A real 'bar' in an era when alcohol was illegal - - - a cheap I mean cheap diner. Wooden walls stark white dingy with age. Simple rectangle linoleum top tables with simle wooden chairs, those ones that fat people (thats me) are scared to sit on and what is really good is they are cheap! And the booze, served in Coffee Cups! That's right, a plain old coffee cup cause people were hiding the fact they were drinking not that it fooled anyone.
Second Scenario - - - - have you been in Chicago or New York or 'back east?' Most bars tend to look the same, slightly shabby, long rectangular space, a counter bar with stools along one side, perhaps space enough for small round tables and two chairs each along the other wall, walk in past bar counter, the length of the bar and in the back space for one or two pool tables. Bar stools red vinyl (back then, leather), the counter an odd shade of mint green. No bottles in sight, these sort of bars were 'officially' not serving beer but what else could be coming out of the tap/
Scenario Three/3 // The swank speakeasy - - - the place mentioned as being from 'The Sting,' the art deco showpiece another answerer suggested. Lots of White and Red - - - white table cloths on round tables, big tables around the edges, tables big enough for eigth to ten people, smaller tables on the inside on edge of dance floor, if the dance floor was crowded these tables could be swept away. White tablecoths, and RED lamps center of table, red & gold highlights throughout the bar. Think French Bordello. Gaudy, can use Chintz curtains to hide the 'wings' anything else unsightly on stage.
But gettng back to reality a true neighborhood bar is rarely a glamorous thing. Simple linoleum top square or round tables, simple wooden chairs, in a neighborhood bar can skip the tablecloth. BUT if you do go with the cafe that 'really isn't serving beer, that is yellow foaming coffee in that mug,' then go for a homely look. Red checked tablecloths have always been on style or go for Blue Gingham; think what if your Grandmother went to Goodwill or Salvation Army for items to spiif up a modest eatery.
Odd prop suggestions // an old step on to weight scale, the stand up type. If suggesting a 'Speakeasy,' modest or pretentious, then you need a THICK HEAVY DOOR (you are the genius you can make it look heavy but it can be light to the touch), This Thick Heavy Door should have a small sliding panel at face level - - - a grill furthur obscures the face. Develope a DISTINCTIVE knock on the door - - - when people went to an illegal bar they would be told things like, "knock twice hard, once soft, and hard just once more." The doorman would ignore anything but the special knock - - - if the doorman heard the right 'knowck' he would slide back the panel and ask, "What do ya want?"
Face framed by grill would whisper "Joe Carlucci said I could het my whistle here," or something equally catchy.
The doorman would squint, try to look past the face, then open the door with a snap, often yanking the person inside, stepping outside for quick second to make certain no cops or Federal Agents were outside, then step inside and secore door, and close the grill.
In conveying the 1920's this would probably be the most important element - - - the non descript door at the end of an alley - - - the door with sliding panel - - - face framed by grill (your lighting director gets kudos if he/she does this up right - - - can make a spooky effect or a glamor effect even on stage).
