Carbide Hole
How much power needed for a Spade Bit?
I am attempting to drill 1" diameter holes through pine 2x4s using a carbide spade bit. The old B&D rechargeable I have just doesn't have enough power to do this, though. I am going to head to the hardware store for a new drill, but I am curious how much power do I need for such an application? Would a 4.5 Amp drill be powerful enough?
250 inch lbs or higher, cordless drills are measured liek this, an Impact Drill will have higher torque numbers but will spin very slow and wont function with a spade bit. Almost any corded drill should work regardless of amperage.
While your shopping, pick up a replacement for your B&D antiquity, if you buy one that has Lithium Ion battery's, which have a much higher cycle life, you will get much more use out of the battery's before you need to replace them, for the typical home owner, you will probably never need to replace them again, in addition, they can charge in 10-15 minutes
