can you cut thru steel on miter saw with a carbide tipped wood blade?
I need to shorten drawer runners made out of steel. Can I do it on a miter saw with a wood blade or am I asking for trouble? I cut thru aluminum all the time but steel Im not so sure about.
Because carbide is 10 times harder than steel, it is also very brittle. Therefore, it will send tiny fragments flying if you try to cut steel with it. An abrasive wheel will work, but will be slow and extremely loud.
I'd either use a hacksaw because the metal isn't thick and certainly isn't hard or tempered. But, if I had a bunch of them to do, then I'd use a Reciprocating Saw (Sawzall) with a new metal cutting blade. Actually, I'd just buy shorter drawer slides, avoid the whole thing, and do it right. I've never seen or heard of anyone cutting drawer runners down and am not sure it's a good solution, but I don't know what the situation is.
