Woodworking Basics - Where to start?
I would like to make some dressers and a table with chairs. I have the plans made out but are there any things I should know before I start cutting? I don't want to waste any wood by making mistakes if I can help it.
Measure twice and cut once is the rule. There is a lot to know before building furniture, you should know the woods available and what woods characteristics are for the pieces you'll be making. What the standard sizes are for tables and chairs along with the types of joinery you'll use. There are many Wood Craft shops you can take courses with that can guide you in these areas. Home Depot even has some basic courses you can take for free. I've been building furniture for years and I'm always learning new techniques and finishes. It's an expensive hobby and unless you own a mansion you'll soon run out of room to put your pieces after they are built. I give them to friends and family.
