Which breed of rabbit do I have? What all do I need for a rabbit?
I own a white, medium sized,a bit furry male rabbit whose about 4yrs old. I need to know what breed it is. Also, there is no specialized vet nearby, so I have no idea of what accessories to put in his cage. Presently, I have a wooden cage for him which is big enough for him to stretch and walk four to five steps. However, I read somewhere that rabbits should not have a cage above the ground and that they must be free to walk out of it. So, I was thinking of changing it. What bedding do I need? What accessories should I put and how do I make a litter box? What is the alternative for hay (as it is not available here)? I need to know if lettuce is o.k. for an everyday snack.
Its very difficult to tell the breed from your answer. A picture would be best! However, a somewhat furry rabbit of medium size could be a fuzzy lop, or a jersey wooly. Check out the American Rabbit Breeders site as they have pictures of every breed.
A cage is a good idea, doesn't matter if its on the ground or off the ground. This will keep your rabbit protected when you cannot be there to watch it. Make sure when out, that it doesn't chew on those very tempting pieces of wire. We prefer cages with wire bottoms and dropping trays beneath. Rabbits that sit in the bedding, especially if you have one the "furry" breeds, tend to be difficult to groom.
Because your rabbit is in a cage, it will need somewhere to run around. We have an outdoor run that we've made with chicken wire that our rabbits just love. We have a similar thing inside the house as well.
Your bedding needs to be odor free. We buy bails of compress bedding at Tractor Supply or feed stores, but I have seen it at places like Meijers. (Hint: it costs more at Meijers).
Corner litter boxes I have heard are the best. They will attach securely to the cage. They can be found at many pet stores.
Toys are important for a rabbit. Here are a few I took from an article from our website, and most of them don't cost anything:
* Macaroni & Cheese box filled with hay
* Papertowl tubes fileld with hay
* Toilet paper tube filled with hay
* Golf Balls
* Empty Soup Cans
* Old phone books
* Untreated wood
* Twigs
* Laundry detergent caps (cleaned)
* Hard plastic keys (for babies)
* Concrete form (tube types for poles)
* Wooden boxes for climbing
* Slinky
* Hay cubes
* Oats boxes with ends removed
Hay is a good thing for your rabbit to eat, and important for its diet! They sell it in small bags at pet stores, Walmart, etc. However, and alternative, but not a good one would be Quaker Oats, and Cheerios. Again the hay would be best.
Lettuce is not a good snack for rabbits. It gives them no nutritional value, but they'll eat a lot of it. The result is they'll fill up on it and then get nothing of nutritional value. Rabbits have very sensitive stomach. On the flip side they have a very sweet tooth. Use treats very sparingly. Apple slices and bannana pieces make a fairly good treat that you can give maybe once a week or so.
