What's the best way to get candle wax off?
Ok so I spilled some candle wax a couple times on one of my shelves and on my dresser, and it leaves nasty hardened wax residue (obviously). I scrapped it with a hobby knife and most of the big chunks came off, but there was a lot of hardened spots that looked like smeared wax on the wood. Some of the wood was torn off in the process, so now it's even worse. What can I do? The dresser is real wood and the shelving unit I have is some sort of wood with a black sort of plastic/finish or laminite if that helps.
Do not use the iron and paper method on the wood, you will damage it more. Do not use nail polish remover, either as it will take the finish off. Get an old terry towel and a very thick pair of rubber gloves. Boil some water on the stove and with the rubber gloves on, soak the towel in the water, wring it out, and cover the wax for a few minutes. Take a credit card and ease up the edges of the wax. You should be able to pull up large pieces and use the credit card as a scraper to itch off the snivelings. Keep using the hot towel over the wax globs and easing off the wax with the credit card until there is no wax remaining.
Now for the wood. Once you are certain that there is no wax on the surface, head over to the Home Depot. Pick up two products. Fornbeys furniture cleaner and Howards Restore a Finish, both are under $5.00. Use the Fornbeys first to remove the residue left by the wax. Use the Howards, which you can get in a color to match your wood, or clear, and wipe it over the surface to restore the wood.
