Insulated Screwdriver
Can any electricians/apprentices give me advice on electrical tools?
Hey guys, I'm starting a 3-year program to become an electrician starting this Tuesday and need to do some shopping for some tools. I know what tools I need to get, I just need to know some details since I have no experience whatsoever in the field.
First, what do you recommend with regards to brand name when buying pliers, screwdrivers etc?
Second, do the tools you get need to be insulated or is it not critical to have tools that protect you from electric shock?
Keep in mind that I am somewhat on a budget but don't necessarily want to completly cheap out on tools that'll just snap or be a pain in the ass to use.
Any responses are greatly appreciated!
I actually just bought some Klein pliers/wirecutters today, they say they're not insulated and won't protect from electric shock does that matter, or is it fine?
I started out 40 years ago and have found the best tools are the ones that feel right in your hands and are well made. Since you will be using your hands and tools a lot try to buy the best you can but many of the less expensive will work for you until you are in a position to buy better quality. Just starting you should not be working on live circuits so the expensive fully insulated tools can be bought later as needed. The Channel Lock brand is good and not as expensive. Sam's club has been selling a large set of Channel lock Screw Drivers for just under $20.00. I personally will not use Klein screw drivers as I have had two sets and broke the straight slot Screw Driver in both sets. Lowe's sells the Kolbalt brand tools and I think they have a life time warranty. A set of the basis electrical can be found at a reasonable price.
I always use tools with cushioned handles when possible to help avoid wear and tear on the hands, you will find this important as the years creep up on you.
