Lens Question, how far is object from a lense with magnification 2.9 and focal length 16.5 cm??
A magnifying glass uses a converging lens with a focal length of 16.5 cm. It produces a virtual and upright image that is 2.9 times larger than the object.
Magnification m = -i/o
where i = image distance
and o = object distance
f = focal length.
Because i is not given nor needed, we will solve for i in terms of m and o, giving i = -mo, and eliminate the variable i elsewhere in the system by substitution.
We now have the thin lens equation
1/o + 1/i = 1/f
Removing i gives
1/o − 1/(mo) = 1/f
Solving for o gives
(m − 1)/m*f = o
so the object is
(2.9−1)/2.9*16.5 cm
or 10.8 cm from the lens.
