Maple Knife
What's growing on my tree?
On two trees one maple and one tulip tree, I have a blue/green growth on the bark. The growth will scrape off easily with a knife leaving little white spots on the bark. Currently both trees are strong and seeminly growing well. Does anyone have an idea whats growing on my tree?
It sounds like you have lichen growing on your trees. Lichen grows on mature trees, and is not harmful to trees. Spraying the lichen with weed killer, however, would be harmful to the trees, and possibly kill them. Think of lichen as patina on your trees and learn to appreciate it's unique beauty. It's really not a single plant but a symbiotic relationship between a bacteria and algae. There are several species (some of which are edible). In some zoos, the artificial rocks are even painted by artists to look as if they have lichen growing on them. A better understanding, and you'll be saying "I'm liking the lichen!", or "If you can't get no lovin' at least you'll have some lichen."
