Firearms modification legality?
I am a part-time fabricator/machinist, I have a garage full of various pieces of equipment, such as lathes, CNC milling machines, etc. I am also a very avid shooter, and have a collection of AR type rifles that I take great joy in modifying with various aftermarket parts and accessories. So, my question is this: Aside from any full-auto conversions, or extreme barrel shortening, is it legal for me to machine and create my own parts/upgrades for my AR type rifles? Or do I need some level of FFL for that? (My main concern is loosing my firearms to one stupid legal mistake, just trying to save some money and be creative!) Thank you.
You should check your state laws in addition to anything I'm about to say, because, well, they vary.
I'm sure you're aware that the only part of a firearm that is legally considered as such at the federal level are those parts that are serial numbered. So, I think you'd be in hot water for messing with any numbered parts. But as for making mag released or polishing Your Own feed ramps, milling trigger shoes, you should be more than fine.
Do pay attention to the talk about renewing the assault weapon ban though, as that would make things like flash hiders illegal. Or you can just play it safe and make them thread-on parts. Not that I can figure why anyone would need a flash hider anyway...
