when and how do i prune a weeping cherry willow treein the shape of a mushroom?
i have a weeping cherry willow tree that is supposed to look like a mushroom. and i have never pruned or shaped it up. when is the best time and how do i do this.
It's hard to explain without any illustrations but I'll try. You want to use what is called "directional pruning." When you trim off an unwanted branch (in your case, ones that the are not weeping downward) you don't leave a stub, you Cut Off the unwanted branch from right where it's coming out. If you leave a stub, it will put out shoots that will probably grow straight up. As far as the branches that do hang down, but put out side shoots, you trim them off the same way, by not leaving any stubs. You can prune it anytime of the year. I hope this helps.
