Why did my Router Bit bend and almost kill me?
I have a router that spins at 30,000 RPM and I used a Roman Ogee 1/4" bit to slowly move into the side of plywood. It instantly made noises and violently broke. The bit is bent at 45 degrees and chipped the Router Base quite a bit. I've read about moving the router in the wrong direction but they never say anything about it nearly killing someone. Why would this have happened? I'm shaking and don't want to use a router ever again!
What happened to you is very unusual, but not unheard of. My first thought is a faulty bit. You say it bent, I assume you mean the 1/4" shaft. I don't think the problem was heat or too much pressure from your description and even though plywood is not an easy material to rout (mostly because of the glue), it should certainly not break a bit. If the problem was not the bit itself, my guess is it slid out of the chuck, maybe from not being tighten enough or maybe because it was improperly inserted- either not in far enough, not centered in the collet, or it could have had lubricant (oil,wax or grease) on the shaft or chuck. The bent bit is likely because it began to slip out of the chuck, when pressed sideways by the pressure on the plywood, and then those 3000 RPM's did the rest.
Get back on the horse and try again. Put a new bit in, make sure its secure and kick the router on and off a few times without making a cut. When you're sure it'll stay put, go for it. Light cuts and safety glasses.
