HBO Documentary "Hard Times at Douglass High"essentially nothing more than a slanted piece demonizing NCLBA?
What is the purpose of a piece like this?
If you watched it you clearly see the problem is not the NCLBA but the parents, the administrators and the students themselves - so why demonize testing instead of changing the systemic problems in the systems?
Here is an example:
A coach told the students after they lost the championship that they were "fu**ed by the system" - now what the heck kind of leader is a coach who would tell his students something like that? What kind of inspiration is that?
I'm not saying you're wrong, but hear me out.
What's the root problem? A lack of involvement by parents and effort from children. Low teacher ed requirements and bureaucratic administration.
So how is NCLB helping? It's over-testing kids, it's causing teacher's to give up spontaneity and teach to the test, and it's introducing more bureaucracy.
The only thing it's not directly changing is the parent's part. NCLB includes information about parents involvement but makes no requirements for it.
