Rambutan Wood

Rambutan Wood
Rambutan Wood
have you ever had fresh mangosteen, rambutan, jackfruit or other type of southeast asian fruit?

I would like to try that stuff but the only type available in my neck of the woods is canned thai fruit and that stuff is nasty.

I've had mangosteen and rambutan fresh, jackfruit canned. I've heard that you can find fresh or frozen mangosteen in some asian stores outside of southeast asia, and if you do find them, BUY it regardless of the price. Mangosteen has to be the most tastiest fruit ever. Not only is it quite pretty to look at, the edible white flesh inside is sweet, with a tinge of sourness, and soft. Supposedly it's quite healthy too, and there's a reason why it's dubbed 'The Queen of Fruits' (with stinky durian being the male counterpart). Rambutan allright, it reminds me of a thicker, more chewy litchi, but less sweet. I'll recommend litchi or longan instead. The canned jackfruit I've had tastes pretty good, and the smell is slightly reminiscent of durian, but less strong. It has a thicker, firmer texture (somewhat like rambutan). I got confused telling fresh durian and jackfruit apart, but jackfruit tends to be more oblongal in shape, and its skin is like scales, while durian has sharp thorns all over. Your best bet for finding these kinds of fruits is in an asian supermarket. You can usually find then either fresh (mostly litchi or longan) or canned (rambutan, mangosteen, toddy palm seed, jackfruit etc). Try slicing them up with cubes of ai-yu jelly (found canned in asian food stores), tossing them in a class of milk and there's an instant, tasty dessert.
