Hey, look who's on?! (plus metal questions)?
Hey, I've been a bit busy with college shit recently, but I'm going to try to get on here more, lol.
Anyways, let's discuss vocals in metal. First off, why do you think metal uses such a wide range of them? (from Power singing to Black rasps, and so on and so forth) Secondly, how much do you feel the vocals contribute (positively or negatively) to the music? Finally, what are three vocalists you think have unique vocals that really set them apart from other artists?

I think metal uses a broad array of vocals the way it does because of the way the genre evolved. Influenced by hardcore punk, thrash metal bands like Slayer were using increasingly rough vocals more akin akin to yelling than singing, and eventually it was a natural step for bands like Death, Possessed, and Necrophagia to take it further and go for full-on growling. As thrash gave way to death metal, the precedent for harsh vocalization was set and it became something that was real and usable for the genre.
I think the prevalence of screams and growls largely has to do with the fact that this type of vocalization is "accepted" within metal. Imagine if the Beatles had tried to get a record deal with Nergal as their vocalist? Even if the use of harsh vocals would have added something to a song, the Beatles would never have had a hit because the inaccessibility of harsh vocals renders them pretty much unusable in rock.
I think the wide range of vocals used in metal is a hugely positive aspect of the genre. If you're listening to a song about grim, frostbitten winters, you don't want Freddie Mercury singing.
Three unique vocalists:
1. Nemtheanga from Primordial. With he's singing or shrieking, he's always amazing. He's the only person I've heard do clean vocals that sound as cold and frostbitten as a scream.
2. Devin Townsend. His amazing range of screams that he mixes so perfectly with cleans blows me away every time I hear it. I normally don't like it when vocalists do the half-singing-half-growling thing, but when he does it it's perfect. I've also never heard anyone else do a vibrato with that much growl in their voice.
3. Christopher Bowes of Alestorm. Okay, I'm half-joking, but really, I think his particularly rough variation of singing is rather unique. Uncommonly piratey.
Hey, you know how black metal has certain words like grim and tr00 and kvlt? I think pirate metal should henceforth be described as "scurvy".
BQ: Pretty good. The main riff reminded me a bit of Ensiferum's "Victory Song".
