Tips From Mr. Home Repair: 3 Steps to Drywall Repair
Often Times you may find a large hole in your drywall in need of repair. You do not need to hire a professional to do minor drywall repairs. Here's how to fix it without a drywall Repair Kit and expensive tools:
Step 1: Cut a scrap piece of drywall with a Utility Knife into a rectangle or square a little bigger than the hole or damaged area. Cutting the area out to the studs is recommended. If you don't have piece of drywall handy, your local hardware store may have a drywall patch you can purchase. Using your piece of drywall as a template place the patch against damaged area, and lightly trace around it with pencil. Carefully saw outlined area with keyhole saw.
Step 2: To hold a wallboard patch in place, insert a small board about 6 inches longer than the long dimension of the hole. Put the board into the hole, center it horizontally, and hold it firmly against inside of wallboard. Fasten the ends of the board to the existing drywall with drywall screws; countersink the screws below surface of drywall. If you have Cut Out the drywall to the studs simply secure it to the studs with your screws
Step 3: Glue your patch into place using spackling compound or wallboard joint compound. Using a six inch putty knife spread compound on back of drywall patch and around edges. Try to get as smooth of a finish on your dry wall as possible. Set patch into the hole and adjust it so it's exactly even with surrounding wall. Hold it in place until compound starts to set. Let compound dry at least several hours. Sand the dry wall to a smooth finish and you are ready to prime and paint.

Of course, the average homeowner does not have the need for these tools. No matter which tools or methods you use, if you properly prepare the surface, sand it smooth, use a good primer and quality paint, the outcome will be the same. Your finished project will look as if it was done by a professional.
