Rivets Aluminum
Physics question?
A flat bi-metallic strip consists of aluminum riveted to a strip of iron. When heated, the strip will bend. Which metal will be on the outside of the curve. Why?
My instinct says it would be aluminum, however I am not for sure on how to explain this.
Thanks Bekki, your hints were very helpful. I should have known that aluminum would have a greater coefficient of expansion.
Look up which metal has a greater coefficient of expansion. As the metal heats, it will be on the outside. The metal which expands less will be on the inside. The inside of a bend is shorter, so this makes sense.
