Sae Hex
I need a cheap way to make a washer?
I'm doing a project where I have to make a cheaper version of a washer. Right now I have a custom made washer with a diameter of 1.188, a 45 degree chamfer on one side which appears to be doing nothing useful, and a height of .157 inches. It says the washer is SAE 1040... I think that's the material but I'm not entirely sure what it means. The washer has to fit with a .5-12unc-3b Hex Nut... also not entirely sure what that means.
I need to know what is the cheapest material I can use to mass produce these washers, how thin can I make it and is there any other way to bring the cost down but still work as its supposed to? Any other information would be very helpful. I've searched the internet inside and out and I can't find anything I need to know. If I missed anything let me know.
OK- Here's some general info that might help.
1040 is a plain Carbon Steel. The 10XX means that it has only Iron and carbon in it. the XX40 means that it is .40% percent carbon (99.60% iron. )
The next part is a little confusing for me. The .5-12unc should say .5-13unc. There is no such thing as a 1/2-12UNC. it means that the outside diameter of the bolt is .500 and it has 13 threads per inch. The 3 is a class of fit for the thread. pretty irrelevant here given that the hole in the washer would be a clearance hole. The B means internal thread. if describing a bolt it should be an A.
the rest of it depends on the function of the washer. what does it have to do?
you could use a lower carbon Steel. say a 1008 or 1018.
You could open up the tolerance.
You could use thinner material.
You could build a die and stamp them. but it depends on how many you are making. It won't pay for one , but it would pay off on 100,000.
