Table Edge
If two books are tied together with string and one is pushed off the edge of a table. What the acceleration?
I am trying to find out what the acceleeration of the book which is being dragged horizontally across the surface of the table. Assume that there is no friction. would the acceleration be
Zero
g/2
g
a value between zero and g
a value that oculd be greater than g
The answer would be g/2, if we assume the books are of equal mass. The falling book would accelerate at 9.8m/s^2, so the force exerted on the book is equal to the force that would accelerate the book at 9.8m/s^2 of course. So what happens if the force stays constant, but the mass doubles by coupling the second book to the first? Well the acceleration will be halved, because the same force will be accelerating twice the mass.
