is the WORST CASE SCENARIO a tool of the desperate, or a powerful persuader?
how do you respond when someone cites an impending WORST CASE SCENARIO if certain steps are or are not taken? does it grab your attention and spur you to act? does it make the speaker sound desperate? if the worst case isn't bad enough to sway you, what IS?
Dislike worst case scenarios. Making people feel desperate and helpless to take action is counter productive. What If's are different. They give the reader the opportunity to explore what may happen IF the worst case scenario was a possibility. Without saying it actually is happening now.
We all need to be able to understand what the issues are. This is best done when people are open to discuss options and solutions. Not when people are scared into paralysis.
If a problem seems too big, then, why feel you have any power to change it? Cut it down to size. One step at a time. Build in rewards when each 'goal' is achieved.
Look back through the Y/A Global Warming answers from about 3 plus months ago. This demonstrates how an issue can get totally lost in the rhetoric, in counter arguments, in criticism by supporters and non supporters. You can hear the frustration and anger. You can not hear about global warming issues.
Now look at Trevor's Recent Answers. He simplifies every issue. Explains it in simple language; layman's terms. Easy to understand for most people. He tries to give an indication of the risks then gives examples of how these can be minimized. Cuts it down to size. Well Done Trevor you are a star *
Education is really important. We all need to take note of this model and try to simplify complex issues as far as possible. So the average man in the street can understand and feel empowered to take simple actions to help solve the problems. We need to act together. Being the brightest crayon in the box is fair enough but pretty lonely. In diversity there is strength.
It is so easy to get lost in Your Own subject area, in the terminology, the debates, the academia. Lets try to be rational not sensational, lets try to break issues down and offer real ways of taking positive action.
