Wood Pattern
How do I tape off a brick pattern on a castle-shaped piece of wood?
It'll be several thin pieces of wood that will be cut to look like a castle that will then be attatched to a loft bed. I'm not sure how I can get the tape laid down in staight lines. Any suggestions?
Many ways.
Snap chalk lines; Find a flat surface at the base of the castle and with a tape or yard stick, etc. measure up in a scale brick size, Horizonatlly as well as across vertically, adjusting for overlap as in an actual brick wall, then with a straight edge pencil line the bricks and mortar lines..
Before doing that, paint the entire piece, once assembled, in a Mortar color, IE: Gray. Let dry, then line the piece, then use tape, Blue, etc, to cover the mortar, on your penciled lines, scaled to size. THEN paint the brick color, and as you finish a course or two, or roll/ spray the entire piece with the terracotta, pull the tape, leaving the mortar lines as the base/Mortar color.
As in Real life, minor imperfections might actually add to the realism. The BRICKS will actually have a slight 3 dimensional effect over the base mortar color. After the fact you can dry brush flaws, etc. in the brick, with White feather lines, Black or darker gray for pockets and voids in the brick. You can add a piece of tape occasionally if you wanted to show a brick with a rounded, or chipped off corner, etc. etc.
Allow drying and clear coat in a Matte or Satin finish.
