Is it safe to use a router on end grain? Are there any particular precautions?
I'm a new woodworking and had a run in with my router last year (don't ask!! I am fine!). A while back I looked into creating one of those neat end grain cutting boards and there where lots of warnings online about running your end grain through a thickness planer. On the other hand I know it is common practice to route profiles, rail and stick bits, finger joint bits, etc through end grain on a Router Table. It seems these would be fairly similar operations, except your fingers are much closer to the bit on a table!! What's up here? Any particular pointers for routing end grain?
The first poster didn't explain a "climb cut", which is where you cut in the direction of rotation of the bit, instead of against it. It is so called because the bit can try to "climb out" of the cut. Move the router in the opposite direction to the way you normally use it.
It's better to make accurate cuts to length on a table saw, and set the end-grain pieces top-side-down on a flat surface, like a table saw, and then glue and clamp them up. That way, you'll end up with the "good side" relatively flat and only need a minimum of sanding. The back side can be done with a Belt Sander, and your fingers will stay attached to your arms.
